make money from home Have you ever typed that search phrase into Google? I know I searched that term more than once quite a few years ago when I didn’t want to go back to work and leave my son in childcare. What I was searching for was a J.O.B. that I could do from home. I was looking for that ‘new age’ company, the company that actually lived up to its ‘work/life balance’ policy, that could see the value of employing professionals who had sacrificed their careers to take care of their children. I was looking for a progressive company who wanted to lead the way in regards to the work from home movement. I never found it.

Well not much seems to have changed since seven years ago. The search results I saw today on the first page of Google when I typed in make money from home were in the main about earning through surveys. Surveys? Is that it? The top ten results in the world and they’re all pretty much about taking surveys!? (Even though I searched global, the results I see in Australia will be different to what you see in your country although there were still plenty of .com sites interspersed with the .com.au sites.)

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you can’t make money from home by taking surveys but if you took the page one search results as any indication you might think that was your only option. Well isn’t it good news that taking surveys is not the only option!

What about you? Do you recall the searches you typed in when you first started looking for ways to make extra money, start a little business or simply find a J.O.B. you could do from home like I wanted to? Maybe you typed in home business or work at home mum jobs.

Cast your mind back and think about what it was you wanted to achieve when you first started looking. I wrote a post quite a few months ago about how easy it is to lose sight of that initial desire to earn an extra $100 or so a month, especially once you stumble on the make money online market.

Have you achieved even your most humble goal yet, you know the one where you thought to yourself “Wow, if I could just earn an extra $100 a month that would ease the pressure.” or “If the $300 a month car payment was taken care of it would really help.”

dreamstime_5411888

Have you achieved those initial goals yet or have you gotten caught up in the dreaming and not really ‘doing’? Or are you tired of dreaming and moved on to sheer skepticism where you don’t believe it’s really possible to earn $100 a month from home?

I think everyone goes through that stage where they believe it’s not real, there is no ‘real money’ coming out of the Internet and many give up and walk away. I tend to be a little more (okay a lot more!) tenacious than that and would rather prove it does or doesn’t work once and for all rather than walk away not really knowing for certain.

Well the good news is that there are so many ways to make money online that it’s mind boggling! Take your pick! I have yet to try a method that doesn’t actually work, that doesn’t bring in some money! That’s right! I’ve yet to try a method that doesn’t bring in some money!

Do you get the concept of scaling up? In terms of making money online generally it’s about bedding down a system and then duplicating what you’ve already done, over and over. When I set out to prove whether or not you can make money from AdSense and I actually made a few dollars quickly and easily, it was obvious that multiple sites would equal more AdSense income.

So I proved to myself that yes, people do actually click on the ads, yes Google do actually deposit money into my account and they don’t ask for it back! And I’ve proven that you can get clicks as high as $1, $2, $3 plus. Nothing new is it but me being me, I had to prove it to myself. You might be thinking like I did that, well that’s AdSense, it’s Google, ok it’s going to work but don’t peeve Google or you’re out of luck if they ban your account. That’s true and I’ve previously written about not having all your eggs in one basket but what amazes me is how quickly we forget that a J.O.B. can be ripped from underneath us at any moment too.

So what about trying to make money from this thing called blogging and making affiliate commissions, that’s just little old us talking about stuff on our blogs with some ads and affiliate links thrown in, does it work? Yes. I don’t have a ton of traffic like YouTube does but again, if I make some affiliate commission here and there it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if I increase my traffic that I will likely make more affiliate commission.

That’s two options, what about the much crowed about ‘product creation’ idea? You know the one where you write an ebook, pop it into ClickBank where affiliates could choose to promote your product for you and you sit back and bank cheques, surely it isn’t that easy right? Yes it really can be that easy, I’ve done it. :)

I wanted to try more methods, learn the theories, put them into action; prove them, disprove them, whatever the outcome I wanted to know if I could get even a few dollars from a method because from there I knew I or anyone else could scale that if they chose to and see some success. (Are you getting the idea that I was one of those kids in the lolly shop choosing one of everything? :) )

I wondered about selling the stuff? What stuff? You know all this virtual real estate that we can develop in a zillion different ways, can it really be sold? If you’ve been around these parts a while now I think you would know that I’ve well and truly discovered that yes you can sell it!

What about writing? There are professional web writers who have so much work on their hands that they can afford to outsource it to their own team of writers! I’m not talking about people who write for $2 an article no. I’m referring to professional web writers, I’m talking about writers who command a minimum $10 per article and often charge $15 to $25 an article. Can that really be done, really? Yes, I personally know a professional web writer who commands $25 an article!

Need I go on?

What I’m trying to say is that if you want to make money from home there are plenty of ways other than taking surveys! Sounds easy in theory I know, and to be perfectly honest it’s not all a walk in the park. It’s not necessarily only about taking an ebook, working through it and hey presto it’s all gonna’ work out fine! Even the most basic technical things can seem insurmountable when you begin something new, I know I avoided selling web property for a long time due to the ‘dreaded site transfer.’

helpinghand

Working through difficulties on your own isn’t really a lot of fun either and can often contribute to the ‘give up’ factor. Personally, I’ve found learning new things to be much more enjoyable when I’ve bought a solid product that offers some level of support.

I have paid out literally thousands of dollars on training materials and to be coached by some of the best online marketers around, I’ve spent hours working through tutorials on difficult programs, on technical problem solving, on finding out for myself whether something works and how. I’ve been burned by some over hyped offers too! And it’s after all that time, testing and investment that I know you can make money from home online and not just one way. So if you’ve been rather skeptical then try to get past that. Stop wasting time wondering and start doing instead. Prove it to yourself; it can be done.

What I’ve discussed in this post is doable by people just like you, you can make money with AdSense, you can make money with ebooks, you can make money selling web property, you can develop virtual real estate so many ways and make money.

The problem that comes after finally believing it’s possible to make money online is one of choice.

The choices are so many that you can often find yourself not actually ‘doing’ any of them or if you do there are more questions left unanswered than answered, which can lead to frustration and you giving up on that particular method.

I know that many of you who have considered selling web property haven’t even tried it for fear of the site transfer among other things. Many of my survey respondents I’ve had the good fortune to hear from, expressed that they are fearful of the site transfer and concerned with not having anyone to help them should they get into a technical pickle. Advice on how to make sites look good, what types of sites to build and sell and some general hand holding, feedback and advice on developing virtual real estate were some of the other things mentioned in the survey responses.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has downloaded and read my free QuikCash ebook and taken the time to answer the survery questions, you’ve helped me gain a good understanding of the areas you would like specific help with. I’ll have some news to share in the coming week about how I can help you more so watch this space! :)

Michelle – I think you have driven the point home very well. Make money from home is possible but there are several brick walls that you need to break through. Those brick walls are there for are reason. Only those who are persistent enough and take action are the ones who can knock those walls down and move ahead. 6 months back, I was making just about $10 a month, couple of months of determined action lead to a monthly income of now $250. I know I can scale this up. In many ways making money online is knowing how to make a dollar online and then scaling it up manifold. Each one of us can find out what we are good at and then what is required is focus and determined action and we shall surely achieve our goals.

A few years ago I typed in Google: make money online, tried out what I read and started making money online.

No need to buy any of the hyped ebooks how they make lots of money in one day, as that would be the same as asking Bill Gates how to become the richest man in the world.

You do need to take action and yes there are 1001 ways of making money online as there are 1001 different shops in a shopping mall (or are there less? :-) . Main thing is to find something that works for you.

Then the myth of the more visitors, the more money you make… some shopping malls have lots of visitors because they have a very good aircon, yet those visitors don’t buy a thing.

Main thing is to act and get yourself a mentor. When it comes to flipping real estate: you should have a good webhost that helps you out with the technicallities :-)

Ha ha Michelle, you trying to beat them Survey Sites down ;) ,

All jokes aside this is a very inspiring post in many forms…. People need to be reminded that having your own online business is a JOB and is no less stable if you spread things out. It’s hard work too and yopu won’t get anything for nothing but I think it’s worthwhile.

I actually enjoy my JOB now that i work my own business online…

Thanks and hope you are well.

Michelle, Well said. I had done the same thing except I was looking from a different angle “Earn Money Online”. Interesting on what makes us all tick when it comes to IM.

Hey Michelle, interesting post. I have a site that caters to the “make money from home” searchers. although I don’t rank on that term yet, I am number 1 for others like “ways to make money” and “how to make money” and constantly fighting it out with another site on the term “make money” (US searches).

Anyway, I offer people a heap of ideas on how to make money. Hundreds in fact, but the number 1 thing that people WANT is to make money with no effort. and surveys fulfill that illusion.

I have tried telling people the chances of making any real income from surveys are slim to none, and they are better off spending their time building real businesses online.

But people don’t want to hear it. I tried for ages to sell them products that would actually help them in their pursuit to making money from home. But they wouldn’t buy them.

All they want it surveys, so I eventually gave in, gave them what they want and now I make about $100 a day diverting them to a survey site.

Some people just can’t be helped.

Yeah. I’m really encouraged when you say one can make money putting an ebook up onto Clickbank.

I’m at the stage still of having been burned by this overhyped product or that. The problem is the time one spends checking out garbage, but I guess we’re talking learning curve.

I’ve heard you speak of wrong information being peddled on forums, so as an extra thing here, if you can think of non-subsription forums where that is less in evidence maybe you tell us here?…

Michelle…good to see you back online.

In an information society, sometimes you don’t know what you are looking for until you “find it” and that takes two things – time and effort.

Knowing what do do with the information is another thing but creating an action plan, taking the plunge, adjusting to any pitfalls and being persistent is paramount.

Reading between the lines one message that stands out is that every person has to discover their unique skills and interests to harness the powerful opportunities on the web. They have to discover what they want to do and then do it well.

In the end, I value QUALITY over everything. Creating something simply for me to benefit does not add value to the web. Create something that contributes to the world and your audience and choose multiple methods of monetization to build a safety net.

Okay, I’ve rambled a bit too much…but you stirred up so many thoughts with your post.

Looking forward to your big news. Be well.

Wow Michelle I’ve could have easily written your post. When I first started 100 bucks seemed impossible! But after going through the gauntlet of Internet Marketing material that could be stacked higher than Mt. Everest I’m finally making a very happy second income.

BTW…where is your quick cash ebook? I would like to download it.

@Lloyd Pinto Persistence is definitely key, I love that you brought that up. Congratulations on your progress to date!

@stef It sure is about taking action.

@Buddy Yes we all come at this IM thing from a different perspective. Great to have you here, thanks for stopping by.

@Hamo Lol. Some people just want what they want don’t they. Different strokes for different folks and all that….. Thanks for sharing your experience.

@Ed I know what it’s like to feel burned. You should read my $2000 report, it’s about a night I got sucked in by hype gone mad. I’ll never ever forget that feeling. All I can say is I’m glad the marketers involved pushed me too far BEFORE I parted with my $2000!

What specific advice are you seeking from a forum? You can often gain a lot from quality blogs in your area of interest and even ask questions in the comments and receive some decent answers from the blog owner and even the community. Josh Spaulding gives away a lot of great advice on his blog and in his free ebooks.

@simply stephen I love your ramblings, they are never too much! Ah, quality…that is music to my ears. The great thing about valuing and delivering quality is that you stand out and for all the right reasons. Thanks for stopping by, always nice to see your friendly avatar around here. :)

@Paul Lol, I know about that pile that stacks higher than Mt. Everest. Good to know all your time and effort is paying off.

You can download the free ebook here.

I think there is still a big “Get what you pay for” mentality when it comes to obtaining credible information.

I have a website that shows how much I make from taking surveys (certainly not enough to quit a J.O.B. if I was lucky enough to have one) and I review about 20 of the top paying sites that people can go to and sign up for free and get paid.

Where do the majority of my visitors go?

To the Survey Scout affiliate link which is where I found all of these sites years ago.

    Go figure.

Michelle – well done again. You mention the choice issue – that’s a big one. We are all on wayyyy too many mailing lists of top IM’rs – haha. They’re good, they “understand how difficuit is” and they have just the answer.

I need to focus more on the business, and the real newbie is even moreso in that position. Thanks!

When I see how many people are trying to make money online, I’m kind of glad it isn’t any easier, because the marketplace would be even more glutted.

I think a lot of people have a hard time, because they fall for the sales pages that tell them how easy it is going to be, then they find out, there’s a lot of details to work through – - but that’s when you find out how serious you really are about being in business.

My advice to those just starting is, get in and get your feet wet, work through some of the technical details and learn what resources are available to you, get a feel for the different business models and figure out where your strengths and weaknesses are. Then you can select a business model where you can capitalize on those strengths and get help to get you past the weaknesses, and focus on that one business model until you see something through to completion. You don’t have to stick with it forever, but if you don’t complete a project, you’ll never know. I agree, there’s money to made using any of a number of business models. The successful people are the ones willing to keep going and work through problems – - just like in any offline business.

@Forest Surveys just aren’t for me but I’m sure they work for some people. ;)

You’re absolutely right; for sure it can be hard work but definitely worthwhile. Great to hear you’re enjoying your JOB. :) I hope Cairo is treating you well.

@Edie I do subscribe to the ‘get what you pay for’ mentality in some instances but at the same time I’ll do a lot of due diligence on who I’m getting advice from whether it’s paid or free.

Surveys sure sound appealing; I can see why people gravitate toward them.

@Kent Yes it’s amazing how distracting email can be especially if it’s full of ‘we have just the answer’ subject lines like you mentioned. I am still over subscribed but am close to doing a massive unsubscribe to give my inbox some air. Nice point on focusing on the ‘business’.

@Garth Thanks for your comment, a lot of gold in there. You are absolutely spot on when you say the successful people are the ones willing to keep going and work through problems – just like in any offline business. I had many moments a few years back where I thought it was all too hard and a load of hogwash but I clawed my way through and am glad I did. Thanks for stopping by.

    Hi Michelle,

Just red your $2000 dollar ebook; you are spot on saying that those scam hypes are normally the ones newbees go for. When I was a newbee, same thing happened: I almost bought some software that would rank me number 1 in Google.

Then I sat down and thought: if 2 people buy this software and target the same keyword, how can they both be on number 1…

Like you say: people should do a lot of due diligence on whom you get advice from. Unfortunately newbees have no experience and can still believe in the get rich quick schemes. The not so newbees know that working hard makes hard earned money. And the gurus know that leverage is king.

    Hi Michelle

I remember when I first started looking for a way to make money online, all I found was scam after scam after scam, however over the last couple of years there has been a shift in the type of ‘make money online’ methods online. And it is has been a very good shift, one towards credibility and trust from more and more Internet Marketers providing value.

Michelle you are one of the new breed of trustworthy marketers, and I look forward to your posts and ultimately your fantastically well written products.

If you stick at an idea and don’t give up on it – it will work, the formula for making money online is not a difficult one to follow, but the key is to take action on your ideas, which is sadly, something that the vast majority of people don’t do.

Hello, Michelle. I really liked the article and the fact that you were able to get anything to make some money. That may be one of the big problems for some people, however, is that there are too many choices and too much information.

People can have a tendency to get bogged down in information overload and be afflicted with analysis paralysis not getting anything done.

  16. DarleneNo Gravatar (4 comments)

Kidgas, I agree with the information overload. Finding something that works and each of us enjoys can be very time consuming and overwhelming on its own. Once we find something, then the trick is to maintain our focus on a daily basis so that we can actually make money online.

    Great article Michelle!
